A Guide To Digital Photography Lighting

Do you know that your lighting can have a profound effect on the outcome of your photos? It is therefore very important for you to have some digital photography lighting knowledge. You can make your photos better by controlling your camera s flash and take advantage of available light in different conditions.

Bright conditions indoors
Try to allow as much natural light as possible by opening your windows or curtains. Natural lighting is always better than your digital camera s flash. Using flash will normally have awful shadows on your subjects. It will wash out the color too!

Try not to let your subject stand in front of windows. Doing this will cause him or her silhouetted against the bright lighting coming in. This will make your subject looks very dark.

Bright conditions outdoors
There can be too much light when shooting outdoors. You need to avoid the intense mid-day sunlight. As mentioned earlier, having flash will wash out the colors.

Strong mid-day sunlight can also dampen colors and create deep shadows. Your photos will lack the warmth and details. It is best if you can take your shots at either early morning or early evening. Your pictures will look warmer and softer.

Low-light conditions indoors
Disable your flash if possible. Only use it at the last resort. Try to use indirect, soothing light from lamps, bride light or even candles! You can set your camera to “auto mode”. This will slow down the shutter speed when your flash mode is off. You might need a tripod to prevent blurring of photos.

Low-light conditions outdoors
Avoid using your camera s flash as well here. Instead you can use your tripod to steady your camera. There is often less light in outdoors than indoors. Hence, having your digital camera to be perfectly still is very important. You will get longer exposure time.

Only use your digital camera s flash at the last resort. Natural lighting is still the best for digital photography. Make use of the tips mention above and take more great shots!
